St Margaret’s CE Junior School
STEM
Science, technology, engineering and maths at St Margaret’s Junior School encourages children to make and embed rich connections. Through exploring and investigating, children learn more about the world around them. Our children develop their subject knowledge, embedding key science concepts and finding new ways of solving problems and learning from mistakes. We encourage children to think critically and apply their learning from across a number of subjects in order to find efficient and effective solutions.
Our focus on STEM subjects encourages children to aspire to be more through creating opportunities for them in the wider world. Children are exposed to a range of careers and skills and engage with individuals across a number of STEM backgrounds, including, engineers, designers, architects and project managers. Throughout their time at school, our children are invited to take part in exciting and rich STEM extra-curricular opportunities. For example, KAPLA Building Club, Engineering Rail Project and competition, manufacturing workshops and our annual STEM and science week projects.
Our STEM Development Lead is Mr R Collier
We invite you to explore our individual subject pages below and take the time to see what exciting STEM opportunities have been taking place this year.
If You Were An Engineer... St Margaret's Winner!
We are super proud of Erin, who was selected as the winner in the regional 'If You Were an Engineer, What Would You Do?' competition.
Erin attended a celebration event at the University of Coventry and was presented with a certificate.
Erin designed ‘ The Sign Bot’ – A robot that can translate the spoken word into sign language and has a screen to show the deaf person and has a camera so the deaf person can sign to the robot and the robot can translate the sign language into spoken English! An amazing idea!!
Engineering Success!
We are so proud of Lois, for winning the regional 'If You Were An Engineer' competition last year 2022-23.
The engineers loved her design idea so much, that it was made into a prototype and unvieled at this year's celebration event.
Well done Lois!
Engineering Day - March 2023
To round off our Science Week 2023, engineers from DRUCK came to school and delivered workshops to children in every year group. The children became aeroplane manufacturers and tested their manufacturing skills. In Year 3 and 4, the children constructed K'nex vehicles and tested them in the hall!
Year 5 - STEM Aeroplane Design Challenge - March 2023
Year 3 - STEM K'nex Challenge - March 2023
Gravitrax Club - March 2023
Engineer Visits - March 2023
The children were enthused and inspired by our two visitors into school this week from Ventient Energy. Nikki and Alexa spoke passionately about their engineering careers and helped children to understand how we can produce clean energy through wind power. The children asked lots of fantastic questions!
BCLM Manufacturing Workshops- November 2022
A group of Year 5 children attended a whole day manufacturing workshop event at the Black Country Living Museum in Birmingham this term.
The children expressed an interest in engineering and manufacturing and were selected to take part in this exciting day! Whilst there, the children watched a live demonstration, visited a real foundry, tried their hand at pewter casting and became F3 pit engineers!
Take a look at our exciting day below...
