Miss Sandhar is our Maths Lead
At Briar Hill our children have a wide range of opportunities to explore maths concepts using practical and pictorial resources in maths lessons and also within other areas of learning, such as Science and Design & Technology. This ensures that they have a firm foundation of each mathematical concept including number conservation - knowing and understanding what a number is and what it represents.
We use the mastering number approach and the White Rose Maths schemes of learning to provide engaging maths lessons that enable the children explore each concept in depth and apply their understanding to solve problems including cross curricular opportunities to solve problems and reason about their knowledge and understanding. We encourage all children in the Reception and Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2) to talk about maths and explain their reasoning which demonstrates the depth of their understanding.
As well as our maths lessons we hold 'Math Meetings' to pre-teach/post teach and embed maths knowledge. Children are encouraged to represent their own maths knowledge during 'Maths Journaling' sessions which allow for further independent mathematical thinking and practice.
