Governors

Governors' Welcome

Welcome to the School Governors of The Federation of Briar Hill Infant and St Margaret's CE Junior Schools. In 2016 when the two schools became a Federation, the governing bodies combined to form one.

What do we do?

Our school governors have a varied and important role in helping our schools to run effectively. As with all governing bodies, we have 3 core functions:

  • Planning the strategic direction of the Federation and the individual schools
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the schools and ensuring money is well spent
  • Holding the Federation leadership to account

We have a good mix of experienced and new to role governors all playing their part in providing a good level of challenge and support. Our role is strategic rather than operational but we do regularly come into the schools to ensure that we can see first-hand, how our decision making translates into provision.

The Governing Body meets at least twice every term to discuss the school’s development priorities with a focus on ‘Curriculum and Standards’ and ‘Finance and Resources’.

The strategic development of the school is proposed in an annual document, building on strengths and assigning resources to develop areas of greater challenge within the schools.  Individual governors are linked to areas of school responsibility/curriculum and work with the school Leadership Team to monitor and review the progress of these aims.

Our Governors

Mr Richard Hawke, Chair of Governors

I have been involved with Briar Hill and St Margaret's since my children attended both schools. I am a retiree, living in Whitnash. My children have long since moved on from education, but I have been privileged and grateful to stay on and play a small part in helping the Federation provide a fantastic environment for children to learn and be happy. I am currently Chair of Governors as a Co-Opted Governor.

Mrs Debbie Morgan, Co Vice-Chair of Governors

My association with the Briar Hill and St Margaret’s started in 2011 when my oldest daughter started in Reception at Briar Hill. Since then, all 3 of my children have been at both schools with my youngest still in Year 5 at St Margaret’s. I have been active with the PTA over much of this period but after this I joined the Board of Governors in 2019 as a Parent Governor. I have recently moved to be a Co-Opted Governor and Co Vice-Chair of the Governing Board. I am so proud to be part of this wonderful school family and am immensely proud of the learning environment that the Federation offers. To me, this is a truly brilliant school with amazing staff who strive to fulfil the potential of the amazing children who attend.

Mr Paul Weighton, Co Vice-Chair of Governors

I have been involved with Briar Hill and St Margaret's schools since 2003. My children had a very positive learning experience at both schools, this made it an easy decision to give something back. I was initially involved in the school PTA and have been a school governor since 2008. It is a privilege to support such a passionate team at the school.

Mrs Anne Horsley, Foundation Governor

I began teaching at St Margaret's Middle  School in the mid 1980s, long before our four children started Briar Hill and then St Margaret's. Just like them, I loved being part of the St Margaret's family and was privileged to work there for about thirty years. It was an honour to be asked to join the Governing Body of the Briar Hill, St Margaret's Federation in 2020, where, as a foundation Governor, I hope to extend the Gospel to our church school, helping to build on the special ethos that exists there - one where children and staff and governors are encouraged to watch over one another in love.

Mrs Jo Jordan, Foundation Governor

I joined the Governing Body in 2003 as a Foundation Governor and have always been immensely proud of the links we have with our local church. As a former parent, a current teacher within the Federation and an active church member I have a thorough understanding of education and schools from all angles and am passionate about helping our schools to continue to move from strength to strength.

Mr Kevin Williams, Safeguarding Governor

I have been a governor at Briar Hill and/or St Margaret’s for over 30 years. Previously Chair at St Margaret’s and led the two schools into Federation. Currently I am the safeguarding governor helping to ensure the Federation deals with safeguarding effectively and in line with current guidelines. Both of my children went to Briar Hill and St Margaret’s, then Campion; the excellent and supportive education at our local schools set them up to go on to graduate from university. I am a retired Civil Servant and lay official for the Public and Civil Service Union. My community activities have included two terms as a Whitnash Town Councillor, coaching Whitnash Juniors FC and several years as a junior football referee. The two schools play an important part in the local community and are well respected for the educational support and safe environment that allow children to learn and develop.

Mr Serhan Wade, Local Authority Governor

I am a Civil Servant from Leamington. While at university, I served as a Trustee for two educational organisations. I had the privilege of joining the Briar Hill and St Margaret's Governing Body in March 2021. I am committed to supporting the Federation to be the best it can be so every pupil can reach their full potential. As a passionate believer in social mobility, I am pleased to serve as the Pupil Premium Governor for the Federation.

Mrs Kerrie Flippance, School Governance

I have been involved in education for 16 years and have been a School Governance Professional for Warwickshire County Council since May 2018.  My role is to provide advice on governance, constitutional and procedural matters; to provide effective administrative support to the governing body and its committees; and to manage information effectively in accordance with legal requirements.  Ensuring that pupils receive the best education and guidance in order to fulfil their potential and to leave education as well rounded individuals has always been at the heart of what I do and it is a privilege to support such a passionate and dedicated team of staff and Governors.

Mrs Carolyn Dearing, Staff Governor

I joined the Governing Body in September 2020 as a Staff Governor. I am a teacher at Briar Hill Infant School and I am also the Early Years Lead and I am immensely proud of the journey the school has been on over recent years. As a school teacher and leader, I understand the importance of staff support and development and appreciate the dedication shown by staff to allow each child to reach their full potential and shine in our wonderful federation.

Mrs Cara Calvert, Co Opted Governor

I have been a teacher at Briar Hill for many years and made the decision to become a governor in 2016. This was an exciting time for both schools, as it was when they became a federation. Both as a governor and as a teacher I am very proud of the journey the federation has made. The curriculum is planned and developed through subject leads working closely together which has a positive impact on the children’s learning and ensures continuity. I am Religious Education Lead at Briar Hill and responsible for the provision for children who have dual languages. We are a diverse community and across the schools many children and their families speak multiple languages.

Ms Karen Molyneux, Co Opted Governor

I have worked at Briar Hill since my children were here, so many years ago, in different roles. I now work across the federation as the school business manager. I joined the Governing Body at Briar Hill as a staff governor in 2010. As the two schools federated, I wanted to continue to serve so moved to be a Co Opted Governor. I am immensely proud of all that the federation has achieved so far and excited for what the future may hold for us.

Mrs Clare Littler, Parent Governor

Hi I’m Clare, and I am really looking forward to joining BHSM as a parent governor. In the day (and night) I’m a midwife. I have a daughter in Year 2 and thought it would be a great time to join the governors team to understand more about how the schools champion our children and hopefully lend a helping hand where I can. I would love to be able to support making a difference in the children's early years and really look forward to getting to know the parents and the team over the next few months.

Mr Bern Timings, Parent Governor

I joined the governing body in 2020 as a parent governor after my son started in Reception. In my professional life I have a strategic role at the local authority and spend my working days on the development and implementation strategies and policies that help schools deal with and successfully overcome the practical challenges they face today. I strongly believe that our children deserve the very best education, and I am proud to be part of the Briar Hill and St Margaret's community.
