Briar Hill Infant School
Geography
Mrs Poole is our Geography Lead.
Through our topic based Geography our children develop their knowledge of people and places and begin to understand how physical, social and economic factors alter the landscape. In Reception this is achieved via our active curriculum which encourages children to immerse themselves in learning about the world around them.
Through practical experiences, such as walks around the local area, children gain an appreciation of local landmarks and buildings. In Year 1 we look at compass directions and maps and walk around the local area before comparing where we live to the Antarctica. We also examine different habitats around the world. In Year 2 we study the seven continents and five oceans, as well as the local area, in particular the buildings in Warwick and we also look at the geography of castles and their relation to human and physical features in conjunction with our History topic. As part of our Wombles topic we compare the UK and Thailand. Our final topic is Pirates which allows the children to develop a deeper understanding of maps in an exciting way.
