St Margaret’s CE Junior School
Design and Technology
Our DT lead is Mrs Johnson.
At St Margaret's, it is our firm belief that our pupils need to be ready for an ever-developing world. Design and Technology at St Margaret’s encourages pupils to be creative problem solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. The Design and Technology curriculum at St Margaret’s provides pupils with the opportunity to draw on and use skills from across the curriculum, including mathematics, science, computing and art. We encourage our pupils to learn from past designs and respond to problems, helping them to become innovators.
Design and Technology at St Margaret’s is taught in such a way that pupils are able to practice key skills through focused practical tasks, evaluate existing products and designs and design and make their own original products. Within each year group, pupils are taught key skills specific for their age range. These skills progress across the year groups so that pupils are able to draw on their previous years learning in order to inform their new designs and products.
Your child will be taught how to work with a variety of materials and mediums as well as developing key skills in evaluating and adapting products, designs and recipes. We are very lucky at St Margaret’s to house our own cooking and practical room. Pupils are encouraged to cook and prepare a variety of savoury foods.
We look forward to sharing with you the broad range of topics and skills completed by our pupils.
STEM
STEM builds connections across the curriculum in science, technology, engineering and maths, giving a firm foundation to support our children's learning. Children are encouraged to explore, make mistakes and link learning whilst being exposed to and taught key concepts which will help them to become contributing citizens in the future. At St Margaret's, our children engage in a number of STEM days, activities and skills as they progress through our school.
