Music

Our Music and Performing Arts lead is Miss Steele.

At St Margaret’s Junior School, we use the ‘Charanga Music School’ scheme of work which supports all of the requirements of the National Curriculum and gives children access to a wide range of musical concepts and experiences. Our exciting curriculum aims to inspire our children and support them in fostering a passion for music.

Throughout their time at St Margaret’s, children will experience music from different times and cultures. They are taught about the different ways music can be structured, and how to recognise instruments and moods. The children have the opportunity to perform and compose a variety of tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments, as well as developing singing techniques for school productions and assemblies. Many cross-curricular links are made with music across the year groups.

Children are given the opportunity to learn a variety of instruments in lessons delivered by Totally RAD and paid for by parents. Children also have the opportunity to sing in the school choir, taking part in ‘Young Voices’ at Resorts World Arena, Birmingham and visiting Cherry Tree Lodge’s Dementia Café.

Young Voices - January 2024

On Wednesday 10th January, a group of 48 children from Years 2-6 attended a Young Voices Concert at Resorts World Arena. The children had spent the autumn term rehearsing all of the words and actions for 10 songs/medleys. On the day of the concert, the Young Voices spent the afternoon rehearsing and preparing for the big event in the evening! Guest appearances were made by MC Grammar, soul/jazz singer-songwriter Natalie Williams and the inspirational 13 year old drummer, Nandi Bushell. The choir and audience were also treated to performances from Urban Strides. All 48 children were fantastic representatives of the Federation on what was a very long, exciting and memorable day.

“It was really fun. There were so many people in the audience; it was a very memorable experience that I might never get the opportunity to have again!” Phoebe, Year 6

“The 13 year old drummer was really cool. She was inspiring. She had performed with a lot of really famous people.” Zara, Year 6
